§ 6-51. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Air conditioning electrician shall mean any individual who is limited to a license classification possessing the necessary qualification, training, and technical knowledge for the installation, maintenance, and extension of electrical conductors and equipment solely for the purpose of supplying heating and air conditioning and refrigeration units.

    Apprentice electrician shall mean any person whose principal occupation is the learning of and assisting in the installation of electrical work under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman electrician or master electrician.

    Electric wiring shall mean the installation of electrical raceways, conductors, or apparatus of any kind used, or to be used, in or on any building for the transmission and distribution of electric current for electric light, heat or power, or nonportable electrical fixtures and apparatus of any nature to be connected to light, heat or power service; provided, however, that the words "electric wiring," "electrical equipment" and "apparatus" shall not be deemed to include or refer to service lines, apparatus and equipment for the sale, distribution and regulation of electricity and remaining the property of the electric service company or for telephone, telegraph, video or other communication purposes, or in connection therewith, or manufacturer wired apparatus or equipment.

    Electrical contractor shall mean any person, member or employee of a firm, partnership or corporation engaged in the business of installing, erecting, repairing or contracting to install, erect or repair electrical wires or conductors to be used for the transmission of electric light, heat, power or signalling purposes, or to install or repair moulding, ducts, raceways or conduits for the reception or protection of such wires or conduits, or any electrical machinery, apparatus or systems to be used for electrical light, heat, power or signalling purposes.

    Electrical inspector shall mean an employee of the city who is assigned the duties of enforcing the provisions of the electrical code. Individuals employed as inspectors shall possess the qualifications for the positions as provided in the position classification manual.

    Journeyman electrician or journeyman wireman shall mean any individual who possesses the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to install, maintain, and extend electrical conductors and equipment. He shall be capable of doing such work in accordance with plans and specifications furnished him in accordance with standard rules and regulations governing the work.

    Maintenance electrician shall mean any one (1) person responsible for the work of operating, installing, caring for and maintaining the electrical installation of any building or factory previously completed under the provisions of this chapter. "Electrical installation" as used herein means electrical apparatus, equipment and wiring installed or operated beyond the main cutoff or primary source, but does not include the addition of power, heat or light wiring which would increase the load of the present system or portions of that system.

    Master electrician shall mean any individual who possesses the necessary qualifications, training and technical knowledge to plan, lay out and supervise the installation, maintenance and extension of electrical conductors and equipment.

    National Electrical Code shall mean the edition of the National Electrical Code adopted by the city.

    Residential journeyman electrician shall mean the classification by which the licenses and electrical work of journeyman electricians may be limited to the installation, alteration, repair, maintenance or renovation of electrical facilities for one and two family dwellings.

    Residential master electrician shall mean the classification by which the licenses and electrical work of master electricians may be limited to planning and supervising the installation, maintenance and extension of electrical facilities for one- and two-family dwellings.
